Shenzhen

Each year City of Sydney is delighted to welcome a special delegation from one of China’s major provinces to join us in our Chinese New Year festivities.

This year, visiting performers and artists from Shenzhen will celebrate the Year of the Snake with us.

A major city in the south of Southern China’s Guangdong Province, with a population of 10.47 million, Shenzhen is situated immediately north of Hong Kong. About 30 years ago, Shenzhen was just a small fishing village called Baoan County, however in 1980 it was renamed, and became home to the first Special Economic Zone in China.

Its rapid growth has seen it become one of the country’s main links to the rest of the world, with 18 sea, land and airports, including China’s largest land passenger port. Workers come to Shenzhen from almost every part of China, bringing with them their local traditions and cuisines. Visitors are able to sample foods from across the country as well as local dishes.

Shenzhen is also home to a number of popular theme parks including Splendid China and Window of the World, taking visitors to every corner of the world in a day.

The City of Sydney thanks the Chinese Government and the Ministry of Culture for making these delegations to Sydney possible. Their involvement in our Chinese New Year celebrations have helped make our Festival one of the favourite events on the Sydney calendar.
