It’s great to be welcoming the Year of the Dragon with a Festival that is sure to bring plenty of dragon-style energy and passion to our Sydney summer. With performance, art, film, food, tours and workshops,our celebrations have become one of the most unique cultural events in our calendar. They’ve also grown to take their place on the international stage, with visitors from China joining us each year to be part of our Sydney celebrations. This year we’re welcoming a delegation from Chengdu, as well as artists from Beijing and five other Chinese regions that will join with performers from all over Australia to bring their magic to our Twilight Parade.

This festival is a positive reflection of Sydney’s diversity, welcoming everyone who celebrates the Lunar New Year. For the third year, we are happy to have the involvement of the Korean and Vietnamese communities in our parade and other festival events.

It’s now been 12 years since I directed my first Sydney Chinese New Year Festival, welcoming the Year of the Dragon at the beginning of the 21st century. It is extraordinary how this event has grown – it’s a tribute to the energy and enthusiasm of all the community groups, our Chinese New Year Festival Advisory Group, artists, Ambassadors and the dedicated and fabulous City of Sydney staff who are involved. I would like to thank them and wish everyone a very happy Lunar New Year – may it be good to you.

Chengdu, also known as the “Land of Abundance” is the capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China with a population of over 14 million people. According to the 2007 Public Appraisal for Best Chinese Cities for Investment, Chengdu was chosen as one of the top ten cities in China to invest in and was recently named China’s 4th-most livable city by China Daily.

This forum is an opportunity to meet with Chengdu government and business leaders in specialist industries and discuss trade, investment and areas of growth. The forum will be addressed by our VIP guests, and a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the Municipal Government of Chengdu and the City of Sydney.
